Why wear swimsuits for women? (part 2)

One of the most popular naturist resorts in France is at Montalivet which can cater for 10,000 visitors at any one time. In Germany, where there are 32 naturist beaches, naked mixed bathing was permitted at public pools and baths before 1918 and whilst naturism was suppressed during the war years the Germans now lay claim to be leading Europe once again.

In Britain, where the naturist movement has been active since the turn of the century, local authorities are becoming more tolerant of naked bathing but are still reluctant to fence off portions of public beaches for this purpose as they are apprehensive of their legal right to do so. However the British movement is less concerned with segregation that it is with securing the right of social nakedness in public places. And there are a number of signs that suggest the nudists are winning. Senior citizens at popular resorts on England's South coast are becoming less worried about "decency" than they are with denouncing tourist beach litter. The long hot summer of 1976 prompted many to discard their clothes - like the girls who delighted lunchtime office workers by swimming topless in the Serpentine in London's Hyde Park, where the tolerant police refused to take action unless somebody complained which they didn't.

In November 1976 the Australians cautiously announced one of Sydney's beaches as a reserved area for naked bathing on a six-month trial basis. Despite some public protest the experiment proved successful and popular. Even the intrepid reporter from the London Daily Express sent to investigate in anxious anticipation of the Queen's Jubilee Tour had to admit that Lady Jane Beach was not so shocking as it sounded.

In Los Angeles some 2,000 people took part in the recent First Annual Nude Beach Day, albeit on a private beach to avoid arrest from the law which bans nudity in public places . In Cambridge, Mass., the YWCA pool is to be the venue for monthly nude swimming parties.

Social attitudes to nudity are undoubtedly changing; the "permissive era' of the sixties forced many to reevaluate their opinions and there are welcome signs of a much healthier attitude to the human body. one popular British tabloid daily, THE SUN, proudly boasts of a topless girl prominent on its prime page three every day. Some of the photographs which appear in this book would never have been considered for publication a few years ago despite the fact that nudity as seen frozen in art has been with us since man first found lead in his pencil.
