Thirty years later the psychologist John Flugel declared: We look back at the (Victorian) bathing machine with an astonishment mingled with disgust. Future generation may one day contemplate with similar feelings the fact that we wear bathing suits at all.

For many years there has been one sector of our society which has consistently rejected the bathing suit, often at great cost. There are currently three national bodies in the United States, one in Australia, one in New Zealand and one in each of the Western European countries. In Britain alone there are over 70 naturist clubs claiming a strong family-type membership. Many non-members also enjoy naturist holidays; in Europe in 1976 about 10 million people happily spend naked vacations at recognized beaches in Germany, France, Yugoslavia and Denmark.
